Freshman righthander matches career high with five strikeouts in 3.1 innings of no-hit relief

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Freshman Bobby Miller pitched 3.1 innings of shutout relief as the No. 4 Louisville baseball team scored the final six runs on Wednesday afternoon to register a 7-4 win over No. 5 Texas Tech and split the two-game midweek series at Jim Patterson Stadium.

A lefthander from McHenry, Illinois, Miller equaled a career high with five strikeouts and did not surrender a hit or walk in a dominant relief outing to earn the win and move to 3-0 on the season. The 3.1 innings marked the longest outing of the season for Miller, who worked 3.0 scoreless innings against George Mason on Feb. 18.

Junior righthander Sam Bordner twirled a perfect ninth inning striking out all three batters he faced for his seventh save of the season. Wednesday's outing marked the eighth scoreless appearance in as many stints this season for the Baltimore, Ohio native, who also has a 1-0 record and 11 strikeouts in his 8.0 shutout innings of relief in 2018. Bordner has a scoreless streak of 21.0 innings dating back to last season and has allowed just two earned runs in his last 51.2 innings (0.34 ERA).

Facing a 4-1 deficit in the middle of the fifth inning, the Cardinals (15-2) scored one run in the bottom of the inning, three runs in the sixth innings and one run each in the seventh and eighth innings close their 14-game homestand with a 12-2 mark overall. Junior Josh Stowers homered, scored twice, walked twice and had one stolen base, while sophomore Logan Wyatt was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Sophomore Pat Rumoro finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and scored once and junior Devin Mann chipped in with two RBIs.

The Red Raiders started quickly Wednesday as Cameron Warren delivered a three-run homer in the first inning. Following walks to Kurt Wilson and Josh Jung, Warren sent a 1-2 offering over the left field wall for his second home run of the season.

Louisville answered with a run in the bottom of the first inning as Mann drove sophomore Jake Snider home with a RBI sacrifice fly down the left field line. Prior to scoring, Snider tripled down the left field line for his second career three-bagger.

Texas Tech extended the lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning on Kurt Wilson's two-out RBI single through the left side to score Cody Masters. The Cardinals answered with a run in the fifth inning on a solo home run from Stowers, who belted a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for his seventh career homer.

An inning later, the Cardinals gained their first lead of the afternoon with a three-run sixth inning. Rumoro started the scoring with his RBI single through the left side to send Wyatt home. After loading the bases, Louisville pulled even when sophomore Tyler Fitzgerald drove in sophomore Justin Lavey with an RBI fielder's choice. Later in the sixth, the Cardinals plated the go-ahead run when Rumoro scored from third on a wild pitch by Ty Harpenau.

Louisville added to the advantage with a run in the seventh inning on sophomore Drew Campbell's RBI single through the right side to plate Wyatt. The chance started with a one-out walk for Wyatt, who stole second before scoring on Campbell's 11th RBI of the season. The final run of the game scored in the eighth inning on Mann's RBI sacrifice fly to center to plate Stowers.

Up next, No. 4 Louisville takes to the road for a weekend series at ACC foe Wake Forest starting Friday at 6 p.m., ET. The Cardinals and Demon Deacons are also set for Saturday at 4 p.m., and Sunday at 11 a.m.
