Louisville’s season-opening 14-game winning streak ends as the third longest in school history

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After entering the day as the nation's only unbeaten team, the No. 8 Louisville baseball squad had its 14-game winning streak halted on Sunday at Jim Patterson Stadium with a 10-3 loss to 13th-ranked North Carolina.

A day after becoming the NCAA's last remaining unbeaten team for the second straight season, the Cardinals (14-1, 2-1 ACC) were unable to complete the series sweep of the Tar Heels (8-7, 1-2 ACC) halting the third best start to a season in school history, including the second longest season-opening winning streak in head coach Dan McDonnell's 12 seasons at the helm. Last year's College World Series squad set a school record with its 19 straight wins to begin the season, while the 1957 Cardinals were 17-0 overall.

Louisville overcame an early 1-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning before UNC erupted for a pair of runs in that frame and added six more runs in the eighth to salvage the final game in the three-game series. Righthander Riley Thompson suffered his first loss of the season and dropped to 1-1 overall despite registering a career-best 10 strikeouts in 6.1 innings, his longest outing as a Cardinal. The junior also surrendered four runs on six hits.

At the plate, sophomore Justin Lavey singled and drove in two runs, while sophomore Drew Campbell was 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI. Sophomores Jake Snider and Logan Wyatt chipped in with one double and one run scored each.

The Tar Heels opened the scoring Sunday with a run in the top of the second inning on a two-out RBI single from Ike Freeman. The Cardinals answered with a run in the bottom of the second on a RBI double to left field by Campbell to score Wyatt.

An inning later, Louisville gained its first lead of the afternoon after Lavey connected on a two-out, two-run single through the left side to score Snider and junior Devin Mann. UNC narrowed the margin to 3-2 in the fourth inning on a RBI sacrifice fly to center by Zack Gahagan.

North Carolina regained the lead for good with a pair of runs in the seventh inning. Gahagan's RBI double to left field scored Roberts to even the score before Dylan Enwiller followed with a run-scoring single to right field for the 4-3 advantage.

The Tar Heels added to the cushion with their six-run eighth inning. Freeman started things with a two-run single up the middle. Gahagan followed with a RBI double down the right field line before Freeman scored later in the inning on a wild pitch. Brandon Riley added a two-run double down the right field line for the 10-3 lead.

Up next, No. 8 Louisville concludes its 14-game homestand at Jim Patterson Stadium with a two-game midweek series against No. 3 Texas Tech. The Cardinals and Red Raiders are set for Tuesday at 3 p.m., ET. and Wednesday at noon.
