Allison Whitfield scores the equalizer for the Cardinals in her college debut

BLOOMINGTON, IND. - The University of Louisville women's soccer team opened the season with a 1-1 draw at Indiana on Friday night.  Freshman Allison Whitfield scored the equalizer in the 75th minute to secure the draw for the Cardinals.

"After giving up the early goal off a defensive misclearance, I was proud of our fortitude and ability to find the equalizer late in the game," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes.  "Allison Whitfield showed tremendous composure in her first collegiate game to get us the tying goal with 15 minutes left.  We certainly had enough chances in the second half and both overtimes. Moving forward, we will look to work on finishing the chances we create."

The Hoosiers got on the board in the fourth minute scoring off a deflection.  The Cardinals held possession most of the first half but had trouble finding the back of the net. Indiana's Meghan Scott had a shot on goal but Taylor Bucklin made the save.

Daryl Bell had the first shot on goal for the Cardinals in the 31st minute but the Hoosier keeper made the save.  Kathellen Sousa-Feitoza had another chance in the 43rd minute but Sarah L'Hommedieu made her second save of the period.

Louisville finished the first half with a 10-4 shot advantage while both teams finished with a corner kick. Bucklin finished with one save while L'Hommedieu finished with two.

The second half started with both teams trading possession.  With 15 minutes left in the match, the Cardinals pushed forward with a 3-5-2, looking for the equalizer.  The strategy paid off as freshman Callie McKinney slotted the ball to Whitfield to tie the match at 1-1 in the 75th minute.

Louisville continued to attack offensively but could not convert the game-winner, forcing an overtime period.  Indiana had a chance in the 95th minute but Bucklin was there to make the save.  The Louisville backline held tough in the first overtime, blocking a lot of shots.

In the second overtime, both team had chances but were unable to find the net, resulting in a tie.

The Cardinals finished the match with a 21-16 shot advantage while both teams finished with six corner kicks.  Bucklin finished with three saves while L'Hommedieu finished with three saves.
The Cardinals return home to host Indiana State for the home opener on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
