No. 7 Field Hockey Defeats Appalachian State 4-1

September 25, 2016 | Field Hockey

Cards improve to 9-1, the best start since 1977

BOONE, N.C. – The seventh-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team got goals from four different players en route to a 4-1 win over host Appalachian State Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals improve to 9-1 – their best start since 1977.

"App State was the more energetic team for most of the first half and we were unable to maintain possession and get many positive outcomes on the attacking front," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "As the game went on, we were able to gain confidence passing the ball around and creating more opportunities. Overall I was pleased with a tough road trip, but we certainly have identified some areas that we must tidy up."

The teams played through 14 scoreless minutes before the Cardinals scored a pair of goals within a two-minute span to jump to a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Taylor Stone put Louisville on the scoreboard when she registered her third goal of the season with penalty corner assists from seniors Erin McCrudden and Lotta Kahlert.

Freshman Bethany Russ quickly added to the lead when she sent a shot past Appalachian State goalkeeper Rachel Gaines to notch her second score of the season.

Appalachian State answered less than two minutes later when Taylor Cimbalist used a cross from Melissa Noble to cut the lead in half.

Louisville took the 2-1 lead into halftime after outshooting App State 16-4 and holding a 6-1 edged in penalty corners.

The Cards would go on to control the second half, firing off 11 shots while holding the Mountaineers to two and owning a 6-0 advantage in corners. Louisville struck in the third minutes of the half and quickly pulled ahead 3-1 when McCrudden sent a feed to junior Nicole Woods who notched her third goals of the season.

Senior Shannon Sloss capped the scoring as the Cardinals capitalized on a penalty corner opportunity. McCrudden got the corner started while junior Abby Grimes provided the stop for Sloss's fourth goal of the year.

With two assists in the game, McCrudden now has a team-best 13 on the season and moves into a tie for fourth on Louisville's single season list.

Sophomore Ayeisha McFerran (8-1) collected two saves in the win while junior Elina Pereira also had a save for the Cardinals.

Gaines (1-7) had 11 stops for the Mountaineers.

Louisville (9-1, 1-1 ACC) will wrap up its three-game road swing on Friday, Sept. 30 with an ACC matchup at Syracuse which is currently ranked No. 1 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. The Cardinals will return to Trager Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 2 to play host to No. 15 Iowa in the annual Pink Game.
