Lyman finishes with a pair of RBI doubles as Vikings win Pizza Bowl series with a 4-1 record

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior outfielder Colin Lyman had a pair of RBI doubles as Vrable's Vikings closed the 11th annual Pizza Bowl with a 9-5 victory over Strader's Raiders in Game 5 of the series Wednesday at Jim Patterson Stadium.

The Vikings clinched the Pizza Bowl series by winning four of the five games, including each of the first three last week. Lyman paced the way at the plate for the Vikings on Wednesday finishing 2-for-5 and scoring a run, while freshman infielder Logan Wyatt was 2-for-3 with a walk, one RBI and three runs scored. Freshman infielder Tyler Fitzgerald added two hits and two runs and junior catcher Colby Fitch finished 2-of-4 with a RBI double.

Redshirt freshman righty Bryan Hoeing earned his second win of the Pizza Bowl allowing two runs with two strikeouts in four innings. Redshirt freshman righthander Riley Thompson worked a perfect inning of relief with two strikeouts for the Raiders.

Offensively, sophomore infielder Drew Ellis led the Raiders finishing 3-of-4 with a home run, while senior first baseman Michael Bollmer was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and a double. Sophomore outfielder Josh Stowers chipped in with a pair of hits.

Wednesday's game completed fall workouts for the Louisville baseball team, which will resume full-squad preparations for the 2017 season on Jan. 27. The opening weekend of college baseball in 2017 is set for Feb. 17-19, while Louisville's complete 2017 schedule will be released later this fall.

ABOUT THE PIZZA BOWL
Upon his hiring as Louisville head coach in the summer of 2006, Dan McDonnell immediately created an atmosphere of competition throughout the University of Louisville baseball program. Whether it's through conditioning in the Omaha Challenge, or in preseason scrimmages, McDonnell believes in creating competitive situations to give his players numerous opportunities to prepare for what they will see during conference and postseason games.

One of the most effective ways McDonnell and his coaching staff can provide the Louisville players with those competitive, game-like situations is through the annual Pizza Bowl series. Following approximately six weeks of fall practice sessions, the Cardinals take to the field for what started as a one-game scrimmage in the fall of 2006 and has become an ultra-competitive three-game or five-game intra-squad series. The winning team is rewarded by being served as much pizza as it would like by the losing squad, which in turn shares what is left. The Pizza Bowl series has become an exciting and highly anticipated ending to the fall for Louisville coaches, players and fans.
