Recently cleaned and repatinated, the statue of "The Thinker" glistens in glory at the heart of campus, a beacon for students, faculty, staff and visitors. Is this sculpture truly an original by the famous artist Auguste Rodin? How did it get here? And what does it mean? In this lecture we ponder "The Thinker."
Professor Fulton will describe its early history and recent conservation, and the current research focused on it. But most of all, he will invite you to dwell on the statue's symbolism and the University's educational mission.
Associate Professor Christopher Fulton received degrees at Amherst College (B.A.) and Columbia University (Ph.D.). He has published books and articles on Italian Renaissance art and modern Mexican art, and is now involved in a collaborative study of Auguste Rodin's Thinker. He teaches at undergraduate and graduate levels with courses in art history and art theory, and serves as director of study-abroad programs.
