No. 21 Cardinals Win 16-1 to Complete Series Sweep of Hokies

Louisville scores 13 runs in the first three innings; Miller pitches career best six innings for the victory

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The No. 21 Louisville baseball team erupted for 13 runs in the first three innings and freshman Bobby Miller pitched six strong innings as the Cardinals completed a series sweep of Virginia Tech with Saturday night's 16-1 win in the second game of a day-night doubleheader at English Field at Union Park.

Louisville (24-11, 9-9 ACC) plated three runs in the first inning, seven in the second inning and another three-spot in the third as they set a school record for runs scored in an ACC game surpassing the previous high of 15 runs achieved on two occasions. The Cardinals, who earned a 3-1 win in Saturday's first game, also matched a school record for the largest margin of victory in an ACC game in the nightcap equaling the difference in the 15-0 win over No. 9 Virginia on March 27, 2016.

All nine starters in the Louisville lineup scored runs in the finale with the Hokies (15-20, 6-12 ACC) and the Cardinals finished with a 12-4 hit advantage in the win. Danny Oriente, who has hit safely in nine straight games, was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Lucas Dunn finished 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, two walks and scored once. Tyler Fitzgerald added two hits, two RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases, and Josh Stowers had two hits, scored twice, had one stolen base and drove in a run. Devin Mann walked four times, scored three runs and had one RBI.

Miller paced the way for the Louisville pitching staff as the righthander worked a career-long six innings allowing just one run on three hits with four strikeouts in his second collegiate start. A trio of relievers followed Miller as lefthander Michael Kirian and righthander Bryan Hoeing twirled one scoreless inning each while righty Michael McAvene made his season debut with two strikeouts in a perfect ninth inning.

The scoring started quickly on Saturday night as the Cardinals plated three runs in the top of the first inning. After loading the bases with the first three batters of the inning, Logan Wyatt was hit by a pitch from Ian Seymour allowing Fitzgerald to score the first run of the game. Later in the inning, Oriente drove Jake Snider home with a RBI groundout before a fielding error by the Hokies allowed Mann to score the third run of the inning.

After Virginia plated its only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning on a solo home run from Tom Stoffel, Louisville erupted for seven runs in the second inning to claim control for good. Mann and Wyatt delivered RBI ground balls to start the scoring, while Stowers and Oriente followed with RBI singles. Following a RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Drew Campbell, Fitzgerald connected on a two-run single to match the highest scoring inning of the season.

The Cardinals increased the advantage with a three-run third inning. Mann scored the first run of the inning when moved to third on a single by Stowers and advanced home on a throwing error by Virginia Tech. Oriente and Campbell followed with RBI sacrifice flies for the 13-1 lead.

The margin moved to 14-1 in the sixth inning on a RBI fielder's choice by Snider to score Campbell. Louisville added two more runs in the seventh inning on a two-run single to right center by Dunn.

Up next, No. 21 Louisville hosts No. 8 Kentucky on Tuesday at 6 p.m., ET at Jim Patterson Stadium.
