No. 14 Cardinals Fall to NC State in Overtime of ACC Quarterfinals, 2-1

November 03, 2019 | Women's Soccer

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The 14th-ranked University of Louisville women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to NC State in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament on Sunday afternoon at Lynn Stadium.

The Cardinals fall to 12-4-2 on the season while the Wolfpack improves to 10-5-4 and advances to the ACC semifinals.

It was back-and-forth between the Cardinals and the Wolfpack throughout the first half. Emina Ekic came close to putting Louisville in the lead in the 18th minute, but her shot from the center of the box went just wide left.

The Cardinals had another chance to get on the board in the 31st minute when Allison Whitfield sent a corner kick into the center of the box, which deflected off a Wolfpack defender but hit the crossbar.

A corner kick from Lulu Guttenberger bounced off a Louisville defender's head and into the back of the net to put NC State in the lead in the 54th minute. Brooklynn Rivers responded with a pair of back-to-back shots, but both attempts at the equalizer were stopped short by Wolfpack keeper Jessica Berlin, who concluded the match with three saves.

A foul on a Wolfpack defender inside the box awarded the Cardinals a penalty kick in the 79th minute. Rivers converted the PK for her fifth goal of the season, sending a shot to the lower left corner of the net to tie the game at one apiece.

The Cardinals' best scoring chance in the first overtime period came in the 94th minute after a pass from Corinne Dente connected with Delaney Snyder in front of the goal, but her shot sailed high. A breakaway goal by Tziarra King in the 96th minute gave the Wolfpack the sudden-death victory.

The Cardinals will look to the NCAA Tournament with a week of rest.  The NCAA bracket for the 2019 Women's College Cup will be revealed on Monday, Nov. 11.
