Ekic's early goal propels the Cards past the Hurricanes

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -  Emina Ekic's goal early in the first half proved to be the game-winner as the No. 12 University of Louisville women's soccer team held off Miami for a 1-0 victory on the road.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 12-2-2 on the season and 5-2-2 in ACC play. The Hurricanes fall to 5-8-2 on the year and 2-6-1 in conference play.

The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead in the sixth minute. Ekic dribbled the ball through several defenders into the box and went one-on-one with the keeper and sent a left-footed shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 Louisville lead.

The Cardinals held most of the possession in the half, Ekic had another shot in the 12th minute that was saved.  Then in the 17th minute, center back Niamh Nelson was issued a red card and had to leave the game.  The Cardinals would have to play the final 73 minutes with 10 players on the field.

Maisie Whitsett had a chance in the 30th minute but Tyler Speaks was able to save it.  Despite the setback, Louisville finished the first half with a 6-5 shot advantage.

The second half was a strong defensive performance from the Cardinals.  Louisville held Miami without a shot in the second half.  Whitsett had an opportunity in 49th minute but it was blocked by a defender.

Louisville finished the match with a 7-5 shot advantage and a 4-1 corner kick advantage.  Gabby Kouzelos finished with three saves, all in the first half.  She finishes with the seventh shutout of the year.
