Sportsmanship and compassion propel Cardinal Forever Rachel Pease to a career in nursing

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Everyday doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers go above and beyond for their patients, staff, and community. The extra effort they make, the extra steps they take, and the extra care they give adds up to a big difference to the lives of the people they touch, especially during this time of uncertainty.

This week we would like to feature some of our alumni that are nurses in the healthcare community.  Today we catch up with Rachel Pease who works locally at the Norton Children's Hospital.

As a senior at Louisville, Pease earned the NCAA Student-Athlete Sportsmanship award in 2016-17 so it only seems fitting she would choose to serve people in the nursing field.  She along with Evie Tate from Clemson helped a struggling competitor from Boston College cross the finish line.  Pease ultimately sacrificed her finish time, a true demonstration of sportsmanship and compassion.

That compassion is what led Pease to go into the nursing field.

"I became a nurse to be an advocate, an encourager, and a servant for the children and their families," said Pease.  "Being able to help during a pandemic feels like a privilege."

Pease works 12-hour shifts on the fifth floor of Norton Children's Hospital.  She says they have been taking extra measures to make sure everyone stays healthy and safe.

"There have been some changes for us," Pease said.  "We fill out surveys before coming in, along with temperature checks and we are given one mask to wear all throughout our shift."

Nurses work tirelessly for their patients and are their biggest advocates.  But the added stress of a pandemic can take its toll.  Pease says her experience as an athlete has helped her deal with the daily pressure.

"Being a Division I athlete made me versatile in being able to handle daily pressure of my job while staying calm," said Pease.  "Being an athlete at UofL specifically made me humble, grateful, and proud to serve my community."

Pease remembers her time here at Louisville very fondly and has a lot of favorite memories.

"Some of my favorites are the team, the people, the coaches, the athletic trainers, and FCA," said Pease.  "I loved competing and the daily grind of being an athlete. I loved the atmosphere UofL has to offer. Too many memories to count but my last year when we qualified for NCAA nationals is definitely one. L1C4."

While we all try to navigate this trying time.  Pease has some advice to follow.

"Stay home, wash your hands, be kind to one another, show grace, follow the CDC guidelines, listen to the doctors, protect your neighbors and yourself," said Pease.

Thank you again Rachel for your time and efforts to keep us safe, it has not gone unnoticed!
