Louisville improves to 6-0 on the year

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With five goals from five different players, the Cardinals secured a 5-2 win over Dayton on Thursday night at Lynn Stadium.

With the victory, the Cards extend their winning streak to 6-0 for the second-consecutive year. The Flyers drop to 1-5-1.

The Cards got out to an early 1-0 lead less than a minute into the game after Taylor Kerwin fired a shot into the right corner of the far post. With an assist from Delaney Snyder, Kerwin's first goal of the season marks the quickest the Cards have scored this season.

A foul called on a Dayton defender in the 8th minute gave Louisville a chance to extend their lead early in the first half. Maisie Whitsett converted the penalty kick, sending the ball to the lower left corner to double the Cardinals' lead 2-0.

Less than three minutes after Whitsett's third goal of the season, the Cardinals continued their hot start by increasing their lead to 3-0. A clean pass from Emina Ekic allowed Delaney Snyder to fire a shot above the Dayton goalkeeper's head in the 11th minute.

At the end of the first half, the Cardinals held a 6-1 advantage in shots while leading the Flyers 1-0 in corner kicks. Dayton keeper Carly Becker and Louisville keeper Gabby Kouzelos both recorded one save after 45 minutes of action.

It was back-and-forth in a matter of seconds between the Cards and Flyers, as Laney Huber put Dayton on the board in the 49th minute. Brooklynn Rivers quickly responded, sneaking past the opposing defenders to net her third goal of the season in the 50th minute. Alexis Goins then scored 25 seconds later to cut Dayton's deficit in half.

Louisville again increased their lead to 5-2 after they were granted a corner kick in the 60th minute. Ekic sent the ball to the left post to connect with Sarah Hernandez, who headed the ball over a pair of Dayton defenders to score her second goal of the year.

In the second half, the Cardinals' backline kept the Flyers to four shots on goal and held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Ekic finished the night with a pair of assists.

Louisville continues their seven-game home stretch on Sunday, Sept. 15 as they welcome No. 9 Vanderbilt to Lynn Stadium at 6:00 p.m.
