Catching up with Addie Wanner

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – With the 2020 outdoor track season unexpectedly ended due to COVID-19, we continue to check in with the Cardinals to see how they are adjusting to their time spent away from campus.  Today we check in with sophomore multi-event athlete Addie Wanner.

Wanner was coming off a stellar indoor season where she just missed earning All-ACC honors in the pentathlon with a seventh place finish.  She finished with a personal best 3,617 points.  She also had a personal best in the high jump with a mark of 1.70m, scoring points for the Cardinals.

The Berne, Ind. native was coming off an injury and had made great improvements from her freshman season.  As the Cardinals headed into the outdoor season, the sophomore had the momentum to continue topping her collegiate bests.

"It is frustrating that all our progress was stopped with little to no warning but the decision was made with our best interest in mind so I respect the decision," said Wanner.  "Up to this point, I was very excited with my practices. I was improving as an athlete and a person through the challenges this year has brought. I overcame an injury and got back on track with my training."

Wanner has managed to keep herself busy at home.  She is also looking to pick up new hobbies with her extra time and is currently learning the art of remodeling.

"In my free time I have helped my parents remodel our kitchen as well as focus on my homework," said Wanner.  "On spring break I came home to spend a few days with my family before we got busy with our outdoor meet schedule. Then I got to spend unexpected extra time with my family."

The exercise science major would like to go to med school after she completes her undergraduate degree and balances a pretty packed schedule between training and classes.  The biggest adjustment to her new routine had to be in her training, especially with most facilities closed at this time.

"I have been doing at home core and rehab exercises to take this time and work on my weaknesses," said Wanner.

While she misses her friends and teammates everyday, she keeps in touch with them through calls and chats. Three weeks into the new normal and Wanner is adjusting to the routine.

"I really miss living with my friends and seeing my teammates and coaches every day," Wanner said.  "Not having a set routine has been a difficult adjustment to make."

In spite of the unexpected ending to the current season, Wanner is grateful for her time at the University of Louisville and is optimistic about the future.
