Strong Second Half Leads Louisville Past Syracuse, 3-0

Emina Ekic led the way for the Cardinals with two goals and an assist.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville women's soccer secured a 3-0 victory against Syracuse on Thursday afternoon in their home opener at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
The win improves the Cardinals to 2-1 on the season, while the Orange drop to 0-2.
"It was a tale of two halves today. In the second half we came alive because of our defensive intensity, which allowed us to create turnovers and be who we are," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "Overall, it was a great result, we got three points and a shutout and now we turn our efforts to a really good Boston College team."
Both teams struggled to find their offensive rhythm in the first half as they went into the locker room at half with no score. Syracuse outshot Louisville 7-6 in the first half.
The Cardinals came out with more energy to start the second stanza and got on the board just three minutes into the half. Emina Ekic delivered a corner kick into the box and after Sarah Hernandez's header was blocked, Jessica De Filippo found the ball and delivered it into the back of the net.
After recording the assist on the first goal, Ekic then recorded two straight goals to build a 3-0 lead.
Five minutes into the second half, Delaney Snyder dribbled the ball to the corner and then delivered a cross to the box which found Ekic, who dribbled and scored with her left foot.
Eight minutes later, Snyder found Ekic in transition with a through-ball, who beat the goalkeeper with a strike to the left corner.
Louisville controlled the momentum the rest of the way and cruised to a 3-0 win.
After being outshot in the first half, the Cardinals outshot the Orange 25-11 for the game. They outshot Syracuse 19-4 in the second half.
Ekic finished with five points on two goals and an assist, while Snyder (2 assists) and De Filippo (1 goal) had two points each.
Goalkeeper Gabby Kouzelos recorded her second shutout of the season and finished with seven saves.
Louisville continues the homestand when it hosts Boston College on Sunday at noon. The match will be televised on Fox Sports South.
