LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Coming off a 6-2 win over Western Michigan to open the season, University of Louisville women's soccer hosts James Madison this Thursday at Lynn Stadium. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m. ET and broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
All women's soccer matches will have free admission during the 2021 season.
With the win in last Thursday's opener, Louisville is now 19-1-2 in season openers and 15-6-1 in home openers under head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. The Cardinals have won 17 of the last 18 season openers, including their last five. Louisville has won 10 straight home openers and is 8-0 in home openers at Lynn Stadium, which opened in 2014.
The Cardinals' six goals against WMU marked the most goals in a game since they opened the 2018 season with an 8-1 win over Wright State on August 16, 2018.
Five of Louisville's six goals were scored by freshmen, including two each from Nina Nicosia and Julia Simon and one from Brooke Dardano. All six goals were scored by players that had not scored a collegiate goal entering the season as sophomore Emma Hiscock also scored her first collegiate goal.
Nicosia and Simon's two-goal games marked the first time that a UofL freshman has had two goals in a game since Maisie Whitsett had two in a 5-1 win over Eastern Kentucky on Sept. 9, 2018. It marked the first time that a freshman has had two goals in their collegiate debut since Whitsett scored twice in the 8-1 win over Wright State mentioned above.
Dardano joined Nicosia and Simon with four points as she also recorded two assists in the win. The last UofL player to have two assists in a game was Delaney Snyder in a 3-0 win over Syracuse on Oct. 1, 2020 when both of her assists were to Emina Ekic.
Gabby Kouzelos recorded three saves against Western Michigan and now has 195 for her career, just five shy of becoming UofL's fifth goalkeeper to reach 200 saves. She is four shy of tying Irene Elder (1986-89) for fifth all-time at Louisville with 199 saves.
ABOUT THE DUKES
Led by fourth year head coach Joshua Walters Sr., the Dukes enter Thursday's contest with a 1-1 record, falling 1-0 at VCU in the opener before downing American 4-0 at home this past Sunday. James Madison was picked to finish fifth in the CAA preseason poll, while forward Ginger Deel and midfielder Ebony Wiseman were named preseason All-CAA honorable mention. Last year, the Dukes finished with a 1-3-2 record in the shortened spring season.
