Hiscock’s Game Winner Propels UofL to 2-1 Win over Wake Forest

Emma Hiscock rebounded her own shot and scored in the 99th minute to push Louisville to a 2-1 overtime win over Wake Forest.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Emma Hiscock rebounded her own shot and scored in the 99th minute to push University of Louisville women's soccer to a 2-1 overtime win over Wake Forest on Saturday night at Lynn Stadium.
With the win, Louisville improves to 7-2-1 on the year and 3-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Wake Forest falls to 10-2 and 2-2 in league play.
"I think our team just battled hard and everyone gave everything they had and it showed with the result at the end," said Hiscock following her game-winner.
Louisville's best opportunity in the first half was a one-timer by Savina Zamborini, but it was saved by Wake Forest goalkeeper Kaitlyn Parks and the two teams went into the locker room at halftime locked in a scoreless tie.
The second half saw plenty of action and the Cardinals finally broke through in the 80th minute.
Julia Simon battled for possession in the right corner and sent a cross into the box. It found the foot of Zamborini, who connected and drilled it into the bottom left corner of the net for the first goal of her career.
However, the 1-0 lead would not last. In the 87th minute, Wake Forest's Sofia Rossi got free in the box and delivered a shot off the cross bar, the ricochet found Hulda Arnarsdottir, who sent it home to tie the match and force overtime.
But, in the 99th minute, the Cardinals had the answer. Nina Nicosia sent the ball through which found Hiscock, who rebounded her shot and delivered the game winner, the first of her career.
Gabby Kouzelos finished with eight saves on the night, which marked a season-high. She also moved into fourth place on Louisville's all-time list with 230 career saves.
"I don't really worry too much with Gabby back there. She's outstanding," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "I've said this a million times, she's an organizer, she's a communicator, she's a shot stopper, she can handle crosses with the best of them. She's just an all-around excellent goalkeeper."
Louisville finished with 21 shots on the game, 15 of which came in the second half and overtime. Wake Forest had 19 shots and 10 after the first half.
Next up, the Cardinals play at Notre Dame on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET.
