Cardinals Open Season at Southeast Missouri on Wednesday

November 24, 2020 | Women's Basketball

The Cardinals and Redhawks will tip off at 3 p.m. E.T.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville women's basketball opens the 2020-21 campaign at Southeast Missouri on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET. Tickets are available for $6 at the Southeast Missouri ticket office. The game will broadcast live on ESPN+.

The Cardinals were picked fifth in both the Associated Press and USA Today preseason polls. They were picked first in the preseason Atlantic Coast Conference poll, while senior Dana Evans was named ACC Preseason Player of the Year and junior Kianna Smith and freshman Hailey Van Lith were named to the ACC Preseason Newcomer Watch List.

Evans was also named one of five Associated Press Preseason All-Americans. A season ago, she averaged 18.0 points per game, 4.2 assists and made 90 3-pointers. Her 90 3-pointers led the ACC and ranked 8th all-time in program history.

Louisville is 96-11 (.897) in the last three seasons, which marks the fewest losses and best winning percentage over a three-year span in program history. Despite not getting an opportunity to play in the NCAA Tournament last season, the 96 wins over the previous three years rank second all-time to the 97 (97-15) they won during the 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons.

They now must look to replace the winningest senior class in program history as All-ACC performers Jazmine Jones and Kylee Shook were selected by the New York Liberty with the 12th and 13th picks of the 2020 WNBA Draft. They also lost Bionca Dunham, Yacine Diop and Jessica Laemmle to graduation.

Louisville returns just five players that saw game action a year ago with Evans, juniors Elizabeth Balogun, Elizabeth Dixon and Mykasa Robinson, along with sophomore Norika Konno.

With the 75-56 win over Western Kentucky last season, UofL has won four straight openers and improved to 11-2 in season openers under head coach Jeff Walz. All-time, UofL is 26-19 in the first games of the year.

For the eighth time in Walz's 14-year tenure, the Cardinals will open the season with a true road contest at a mid-major. They have faced eight different teams in their road openers. They are 7-0 all-time in road openers under Walz and have won those games by an average margin of 21.0 points per game.

ABOUT THE REDHAWKS

Last season, Southeast Missouri finished the season near the top of the Ohio Valley Conference standings and an OVC Women's Basketball Tournament championship before their automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament was nullified by the tourney's cancellation amid COVID-19 concerns. The Redhawks return their top scorer Tesia Thompson (19.7 ppg), but lose Carrie Shephard (16.6 ppg). Junior guard Taelour Pruitt notched 9.6 points per game while also leading the team with 111 assists on the season.

Series History - Louisville holds a 2-0 record against Southeast Missouri with both games occuring in the last decade at the KFC Yum! Center. The Cardinals and Redhawks first met on Nov. 19, 2010, when Louisville dominated SEMO 97-43. They met once more on Nov. 10, 2017, in a game that had a similar result as the Cardinals defeated SEMO 80-40.

The Last Meeting -  The Cardinals opened their 2017 WNIT appearance by doubling up the Redhawks 80-40 at the KFC Yum! Center. UofL shot 48.3 percent from the field and better than 44 percent from the 3-point line in the rout.

Tickets -  Fans can purchase tickets for $6 through the Southeast Missouri ticket office. Face coverings are required at SEMO Basketball games. The seating for this event is set up with social distancing guidelines; please sit only in the assigned seat listed on your ticket. All seating must be accessed from the upper concourse; there is no floor access. If you are sick or experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, please stay home. Refunds or exchanges will only be granted in event of a cancellation.
