Ekic's Goal Not Enough, Louisville Succumbs to No. 1 North Carolina

October 29, 2020 | Women's Soccer

Emina Ekic's goal in the 49th minute gave Louisville a 1-0 lead.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville women's soccer led 1-0 early in the second half, but eventually fell 3-1 to No. 1 North Carolina at Lynn Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

With the loss, the Cardinals conclude the fall portion of the schedule with a 4-4 record, while North Carolina improves to 8-0 and 7-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Louisville now awaits Sunday's slate of five league games to determine their ACC Tournament fate.

The first half saw few scoring chances for either team as the two teams went into the locker room at half tied at zero. Louisville managed four shots in the first stanza, while limiting the Tar Heels to a season-low three first half shots.

But, the action quickly picked up in the second half. After barely avoiding a North Carolina goal that hit the cross bar just three minutes into the second half, Emina Ekic worked her magic a minute later to give the Cardinals the 1-0 lead.

Taylor Kerwin sent the ball in the box and Ekic beat all defenders to it, crossing from her right to left foot, drilling the ball past the goalkeeper to the top left of the goal for the score.

Unfortunately, the lead didn't last long as North Carolina responded immediately when Brianna Pinto found Rachel Jones to tie the game. Three minutes later, Sam Meza scored to give North Carolina a 2-1 lead off a corner kick.

Ekic tried to tie the game in the 74th minute, but her left footed attempt was wide and then the Tar Heels added another goal in the 80th minute to extend their lead to 3-1.

Louisville finished the game with eight shots to North Carolina's 14 as they were outshot 11-4 in the second half.

Ekic now has 28 career goals in a Louisville uniform, which ranks fourth all-time in program history.
