No. 13 Louisville Bounces Back with 1-0 Win at Virginia Tech

October 18, 2020 | Women's Soccer

Freshman Morgan Bentley tallied her first career goal in the win.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 13 Louisville women's soccer team didn't get a ton of scoring chances, but it took advantage of the ones it earned in a 1-0 victory against a surging Virginia Tech squad Sunday at Thompson Field in Blacksburg, Va.

The win served as the Cardinals' (4-2) first win over the Hokies (2-7) since joining the ACC in 2014. The last time Louisville had beaten Virginia Tech came in 1995 with a 2-0 victory in Blacksburg. Louisville was 0-2-2 in league games against the Hokies entering Sunday.

Louisville freshman midfielder Morgan Bentley put the Cardinals on the board in the 33rd minute, booting an unassisted goal into the net from just inside the box. The goal marked the first of Bentley's young collegiate career on just her second shot in a Cardinals uniform.

Cardinals goalkeeper Gabby Kouzelos stayed busy, especially early in the matchup. The Hokies tallied 9 shots and put four of them on goal in the first half.

Virginia Tech controlled the tempo for much of the game, amassing 18 total shots to Louisville's five. But quality of shot proved more valuable than quantity for the Cardinals, who put four of those five shots on goal.

Virginia Tech freshman forward Tori Powell gave the Hokies their best chance to even things up in the 89th minute when she took a cross and put it on target, but Kouzelos picked up her eighth and final save of the game to seal the one-goal victory.

After winning their last road game of the regular season, the Cardinals will return home to enjoy a week off before hosting Notre Dame on Sunday, Oct. 25 at Lynn Stadium for their penultimate match. The game is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
