Louisville Opens ACC Tournament Against No. 10 Virginia

The Cardinals and the Cavaliers will play at 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday night.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville women's soccer opens ACC Tournament play in Cary, N.C., against No. 10 Virginia on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET. The match will broadcast live on the ACC Network.
 
The Cardinals are 4-4 on the season, while the Cavaliers are 7-2-1 overall and 5-2-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
 
Louisville is playing in its third straight ACC Tournament and its third overall since joining the league in 2014. The Cardinals are seeking their first ACC Tournament win after falling 2-1 at Virginia in 2018 and 2-1 against NC State in 2019.
 
Louisville is 0-3 against ranked teams this season, including a 2-0 loss at No. 11 Virginia on Oct. 15, and is looking to end a five-match losing streak to ranked teams. They have a six-match non-winning streak as they tied No. 9 Duke on Oct. 18, 2019. Their last win over a ranked team was a 1-0 win over No. 9 Clemson at Lynn Stadium on Oct. 10, 2019.
 
The Cardinals have lost back-to-back games for the first time this season. They are looking to avoid their first three-game losing streak since the final three games of the 2018 season when they lost 1-0 to Virginia Tech in the regular season finale on Oct. 25, 2-1 to No. 11 Virginia in the ACC Tournament on Oct. 28 and 2-1 at No. 10 Tennessee in the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 9.
 
Senior Emina Ekic ranks second in the league and fourth in the NCAA with 1.88 points per game. She's tied for second in the ACC and tied for 6th in the country with 0.75 goals per game. Her 0.38 assists per game rank sixth in the league and 24th in the nation.
 
Louisville is 3-1 this season when Ekic scores a goal and 17-6 overall when she scores a goal in her career.

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS

Virginia enters Tuesday's matchup with a 7-2-1 record overall on the season.  The Cavaliers are currently on a two-game winning streak after defeating ACC foes Boston College 2-1 and Syracuse 5-3.  Virginia is led by junior Alexa Spaanstra with five goals on the year, which is tied for fourth in the ACC behind Louisville's Emina Ekic's six.  Spaanstra ranks third in the ACC with seven points.  Freshman midfielder Lia Godfrey leads the Cavaliers with five assists on the season, which ranks third in the ACC.     
 
Series History - Louisville is 0-8 all-time against the Cavaliers.  The closest match-up between the two ACC rivals was 1-0 overtime loss in 2014.
 
Last Meeting (Oct. 15, 2020) - Coming into the match-up, the No.13 Cardinals started off the 2020 season hot with a 3-1 record on the season. Louisville goaltender Gabby Kouzelos earned a career-high 10 saves against the Cavaliers, two shots managed to get past her in the first half as Virginia controlled the tempo from start to finish to limit Louisville's chances.  The Cardinals only had two chances against the Cavaliers which came on shots from Nadege L'Esperance and Jessica Camken, who got those shots off in the first half and second half, respectively.
