LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville women's soccer came up short 4-1 at No. 2 Virginia on Thursday night.

With the defeat, Louisville moves to 7-6-1 on the season and 3-5-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while Virginia improves to 14-1-1 and 7-0-1 in league play.

Virginia quickly got on the board on a corner kick in the second minute when UofL goalkeeper Gabby Kouzelos attempted to punch the ball out but it ricocheted off her and into the net for an own goal.

In the 22nd minute, the Cavaliers added a second goal and the Cardinals went into the locker room at halftime trailing 2-0.

Louisville nearly trimmed the lead in half in the 66th minute when Mikayla Hampton got behind the defense, but her short-footed kick was wide left.

In the 71st minute, the Cardinals got another chance and this time they took advantage. Emma Hiscock sent a beautiful pass into the box, which found the head of Julia Simon, who drilled it home to put Louisville on the board.

However, just over a minute later, Alexis Theoret delivered a rocket to the top left corner of the net to extend Virginia's lead back to two and then they added another goal in the 80th minute for the final score of 4-1.

The Cavaliers finished with 25 shots, 11 of which were on goal, while the Cardinals had seven shots with one on goal.

Kouzelos had six saves in the first half and finished the match with eight, which tied her season-high.

Simon is now tied with Hiscock for the team-lead with four goals this season and leads the team with 11 points.

Louisville remains on the road and plays at Clemson on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET.
