Cardinals Set for NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

The University of Louisville track and field program will send four student-athletes to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon this week. Aliyah Welter will represent the women in the pole vault, while Trey Allen (high jump), Albert Kosgei (3000m steeplechase) and Adar Sheere will compete for the Louisville men.
 
"We are excited to be in Eugene for the NCAA Finals," said UofL head coach Dale Cowper. "We were able to get a practice for round at Hayward Field today as the updated facility is simply remarkable. It has been a year a remember and these four students have a final opportunity to show why are they are each ranked as one of the best at their respective disciplines."

Setting the Stage
On Wednesday evening, Kosgei will kick off the action for the Cardinals when he competes in the semifinals of the 3000-meter steeplechase at approximately 8:32 p.m. (ET). The senior from Iten, Kenya earned an automatic qualification after winning his heat with a time of 8:42.43 in the NCAA East Preliminary round and finished sixth overall. The 2021 ACC bronze medalist is making his second career NCAA Outdoor Championship appearance. In 2019, he earned Second Team All-American honors for a 15th place finish.
 
Welter will compete in the pole vault finals on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. (ET). The sophomore from Monticello, Ill., matched her personal best vault of 4.17m (13-8.25) to finish tied for eighth in the NCAA East Prelims. She is making her first NCAA Outdoor Championship appearance and also qualified for the 2021 Indoor Championships where she placed
 
The men return to action on Thursday. Trey Allen will get started with the high jump at 7:30 p.m. The redshirt freshman from Birmingham, Ala., is making his first NCAA Championship appearance after clearing a career-best height of 2.19m (7-2.25) in the East Prelims. The mark matched a facility record and placed him tied for sixth in the event.
 
Sheere will follow as the discus throw commences at 7:35 p.m. The sophomore from Givatayim, Israel, earned his way to the NCAA Championships after placing eighth at the NCAA East Prelims with a season-best throw of 57.63m (189-1). The transfer from Memphis is making his second NCAA Outdoor Championship appearance after reaching the finals in 2019 while competing for the Tigers.

The steeplechase finals are slated to take place Thursday at 8:24 p.m.
